The “NERDY” Secret to Helping Your Teen
Love to Learn
Why the real secret to success isn’t what you learn, it’s knowing
HOW to learn with these 12 essential study skills

Mama, you know learning matters. You know your child's grades matter. But, you know your teen doesn't love learning because something is missing.

No matter if you have a tween in middle school, teen in high school, or a young adult in college, study skills are essential for future opportunities from college acceptances to scholarships earned to which doors are open (and which aren't).

If things haven't been going well at school, whether things just got rough last semester or a certain subject has been hard forever, it can feel like you've hit a wall. That your teen just won't live up to his potential like you want and you know he can...

Maybe you are "getting" to do the homework battle every day ... or maybe you feel like your teen's assistant because you're constantly nagging her and reminding her to study, let alone keeping track of which assignments are due when...

Or maybe, things are going well right now. Your teen just seems to "get it" and get by with minimal effort. But something tells you it won't be this way forever...especially as high school and college loom on the horizon.

Whatever’s going on in your household, you probably want the same thing that most parents do:

A child that loves to learn because he or she knows HOW to learn

Your teen's grades to reflect his effort and true potential

Your daughter to take responsibiity for her learning so you can stop caring more about her education than she does

Teens who are confident, motivated, and distraction-free successful learners

"Jessyka has been the absolute best investment in my daughter.”
"Jessyka has been the absolute best investment in my daughter… hands down! ... Jessyka instill(ed) a joy for learning in my very strong-willed child... how to organize her academic world, how to take tests and persevere, and how to take notes that work and prepare her for more academic rigor. My daughter ended up with all As and Bs."

and...
"I (told my daughter), 'I'm gonna get this for you because you're so stressed out, and I'm stressed out trying to figure out how to help you."
I Get It
I've been the teen who cried in class because the teacher was going too fast and made me feel overwhelmed.

I've been the teen who studied for HOURS preparing for a test just to feel "ready".

I've even been the teen who felt hopelessly lost after a teacher said, "Jessyka, I can't help you. I don't know to make you understand; this is the only way I know how to teach it." I'll never forget the day my physics teacher uttered those words.
All of my hopes and dreams of becoming valedictorian were gone in an instant. The years of hardwork, the effort I'd put in to earn straight A's, were suddenly worthless. I'd made it to senior year, for what?

Or so I thought.

And so might your child in middle school, high school, or college who feels hopelessly lost in one class or many... This year or every day...

But, I knew my intelligence wasn't a problem, just like you and I both know your teen is smart enough to learn anything he or she wants to do. I knew I could learn anything thanks to an understanding of my learning style and grasp of study skills. While I didn't know it then, I had The NERDY Method in my back pocket. I just had to find the right tutor to teach me the right way. When my physics teacher told me she couldn't help, I had a choice to make: rely on my ability to learn HOW to learn through study skills or give up. I chose to keep going.

I'm Jessyka Coulter, and it's been an absolute pleasure to teach teens HOW to learn for over five years. To take teens from "I don't know how to study" and "This homework is boring" to getting them excited to learn even difficult subjects like physics.

But, I didn't start as a study skills tutor. When I first started tutoring professionally, I chose a subject and grade level to tutor just like every other content or academic tutor: middle school math, pretty much any level of writing, and ACT prep. Yet, after two years I kept seeing the same patterns over and over again: teens not showing up to lessons with notes, teens not being able to answer questions about test dates, teens not understanding why we were even doing the homework, and more.

So, I went home and made a list. A list of all of the skills I needed and used in middle school through college to learn what I wanted and get the grades I wanted. I realized they were study skills every single teen I was and had tutored was missing. And the sadder truth: I knew the middle schoolers and high schoolers I helped every day in class as a paraprofessional were missing the same skills.

There just wasn't the time for me to teach teens study skills during our tutoring lessons. We had homework to complete, a test to study for, something very class related that was likely worth a grade. Teachers feel the same way. They know teens need help personalizing their learning through study skills, but there's just not the time to cover the material and teach each child how to learn through study skills.

After working with hundreds of tweens, teens, and young adults in and out of the classroom as a tutor, substitute teacher, and para, I know anyone can learn anything

Don't let your children believe they can't learn or will never understand a certain subject. I can help.
Just Ask...
"He went from being a D student...to an A student who now feels confident that he can indeed be a math-minded kid."
"(Jessyka) made 8th grade math engaging and fun for my son who has always had a perception that he "just wasn't good at math". He went from being a D student, struggling to conceptualize the content, to an A student who now feels confident that he can indeed be a math-minded kid."

"Jessyka is a fantastic tutor and helped our 6th grader get caught up in math. My child has ADHD, and Jessyka’s strategies really help her work more effectively. I’d recommend her for any subject."

We Each Learn Differently

The way I learned was not the same way my physics teacher taught. Was she a "bad" teacher? Maybe. But, there were other students in my class who loved her and seemed to succeed easily without experiencing my same levels of frustration and confusion.

Your teen has to know how to adapt if the teacher teaches in the "wrong way." But, that's only possible when your teen has learned the study skills that enable him to personalize his learning.

Middle school is the PERFECT time to learn study skills, but it's never too late. If your teen learns how to learn in 6th or 7th grade, then practices and perfects them in 8th grade, high school is a breeze, college is a natural next step, and no challenge at any job seems impossible.

Unfortunately, Most School Don't Teach Study Skills
Introducing The NERDY Method
Give your teen the 12 essential study skills to stop feeling so overwhelmed and
stressed out about school that he won't get anywhere else.

Studying is the process of learning, and with study skills onboard you can:
  • Be confident your child is ready for any learning opportunity
  • Relax knowing your teen understands how to personalize his own learning
  • Celebrate when your daughter walks across the stage to get her diploma and/or degree
  • Enjoy the peace of mind that comes with your child's abundance of opportunities to choose from
  • Cheer on your teen instead of nag your teen
  • Breathe a sigh of relief when your young adult says "I have a test tomorrow"

The NERDY Method gives you back your sanity and empowers your teen to take responsibility for his or her learning...FINALLY!

Mamas Have Said...
"This process seems to resonate with him, and he is articulating that he does have a desire to improve that I have not seen before.”
and...
"(My granddaughter has) more confidence in interacting with teachers ... more productive homework and improved grades."

“Started working with Jessyka on a recommendation from my sister. (My granddaughter is a) 12 year old girl at the age of knowing it all, and we weren't sure how (the Love to Learn study program) would work. But, the program was great, and we saw results from more confidence in interacting with teachers to more productive homework and improved grades. I would recommend this program to any tween or teen who needs to learn how to study for all subjects.”

"He is much more self-disciplined this year! He is also more self-motivated than ever before and making decisions on his own to stay on task and be organized."

“Just wanted to let you know that for the first time since 9th grade, Lucas has all A’s! Even in his dual credit college course! Thank you for being a positive influence in his life and for making a difference! He is much more self-disciplined this year! He is also more self-motivated than ever before and making decisions on his own to stay on task and be organized. I really feel like this program was a great choice for my son! I have regained some of my sanity and that is a +++!!!”

So What Will Your Teen Learn?

Note Taking:

  • Your teen will ACTUALLY start taking notes + using his notes to study
  • You’ll stop seeing notes on scrap pieces of paper or crammed into the bottom of his backpack
  • Your teen will never feel like he can’t keep up again

Annotating:

  • EVERYTHING will be annotated - notes, study guides, books, etc.
  • Your daughter will create a consistent, easy-to-use annotation system customized to HER

Goal Setting:

  • Your tween will develop both long-term AND short-term goals for this school year and beyond
  • Whether your child wants to get straight-A’s, go to a certain college, or just level up in a video game, he’ll know the steps to develop and achieve a SMART goal

Motivation:

  • What motivates your young adult? We’ll find out!
  • How can your teen go from procrastinating for hours to looking forwad to getting homework done and earning a break? It’s all about his rewards system.
  • Internal motivation is not a myth when it’s driven by a goal that matters to your teen

Perfect Study Sessions:

  • What does studying look like for your teen? It depends on her learning style and preferences
  • There is a right way to study (and a right place!)
  • Stop your teen from thinking “I don’t know how to study” and “That was a waste of time.”
  • Effective studying doesn’t take 10 hours; it can take 10 minutes

Retaining Info:

  • Studying for finals starts on day 1 of class; not the night before the test
  • There are 100s of ways to learn, but your teen prefers to learn 1 way best
  • With the right strategies, your college student will remember material for life

Organization:
  • Your teen needs to be physically and mentally organized from routines to folders
  • No more scrambles out of the door in the morning or pleading texts about forgotten projects or lunches

Time Management:
  • Physical planner? Digital calendar? White board? Sticky notes? I will help your teen decide
  • Your tween will stop leaving class unsure of homework and with a plan of what to study when to get ready for the next test
  • Papers and projects will be broken into manageable chunks, not frantic all-nighters

Soft Skills:
  • Each classroom is a mini workplace. WIth the right strategies, your teen can get along with any classmate or coworker, even a dreaded boss or mean teacher
  • Resumes and interview prep don’t just happen after graduation. Resumes start before high school.

Confidence:
  • Does your teen believe in herself? What’s her self-talk like? Let’s make it positive!
  • Your son’s friends... are they REALLY his friends?
  • Your teen will walk away understanding why confidence matters, where it comes from, and with strategies to boost confidence.

Self-Advocacy:

  • You can’t send every email or call every teacher. At some point, you need to let go (and I know you want to take a step back...)
  • Should your teen raise his hand in class? Send an email? Or stay after school? We’ll discuss the pros and cons of different ways to self-advocacte.

Grit and Resilience:

  • What does your son do if things don’t go well the first time? With grit, he doesn’t give up.
  • Is your daughter able to find an alternative solution? She can with resilience!

I Only Work with 10 Teens 1:1 at Any Given Time

That means when spots fill, your teen will have to wait MONTHS to start working with me. During those months of waiting, your teen's grades will suffer. You will continue to get more and more stressed because your teen will get further and further behind. Missing assignments will pile up, test grades won't improve, and your child might even have to repeat the school year...

The simple solution? Don't wait! Give your teen the chance to see immediate results with study skills and a newfound love of learning.

Still Have Questions?
  • What if my teen resists?
I totally get it! If I'm honest, the first lesson can be a little rough. That's why I offer trial lessons and the Love to Learn Guarantee and why I created a bonus just to get your teen's buy-in. But, remember: you get your teen to the first lesson, and I'll do the rest. No teen has ever gotten up and left during his or her first lesson with me, and it's very common for teens to look forward to the second lesson much more than the first because they better know what to expect and are eager to learn more.
  • Is my teen too young or too old for the Love to Learn program?
Middle school is the PERFECT time for your teen to learn study skills. As soon as your child reaches 6th or 7th grade (whatever middle school means for him/her), the study skills taught in the Love to Learn program are needed. But, it's never too late to learn how to learn using The NERDY Method. I have taught study skills to high schoolers, college students, and even adults going back to school for everything from GEDs to Graduate Degrees.
  • What if my teen is too busy?
Lessons are 60 min (1 hour) a week. We'll choose a day and time and keep it as consistent as possible. Because it's only 1 hour a week, and it's always the same day and time, it's easy to schedule other things around our lessons. I also have a flexible rescheduling policy :)
  • I've hired other coaches/tutors/therapists before and not seen results. What's different about Love to Learn?
Content / academic / subject-specific tutors are amazing people. I know your child may sometimes need help getting caught up and actually learning the material in a certain class before study skills have the desired results. That's why I also offer content tutoring in addition to study skills tutoring through the Love to Learn program. BUT, academic / class-specific tutoring is a very short-term solution. It's like a BandAid whereas using The NERDY Method to teach your teen HOW to learn builds the life-long foundation content tutoring can't.

Executive Functioning Coaches teach EF Skills (executive functioning skills). Many of those skills are included in the Love to Learn program. BUT, study skills like note taking and annotating are study skills no EF coaches teach.

As to therapists and counselors, therapy is VERY different from tutoring. But, many families with teens who have ADHD, are strong-willed, or have behavior problems have noted bigger, better improvements as a result of the Love to Learn program vs therapy.
  • I'm not sure about online lessons...
The Love to Learn study skills program is NOTHING like distance / online / COVID style schooling. Your teen won't be put in a breakout room hoping the teacher will stop by and offer help.

Lessons are 1:1 and interactive. Your teen and I will talk the entire time, there are activities for us to do together on and off-screen, and your child will be completing a cloze guide during the "how-to" (1st part) of each lesson to ensure all three learning styles are meet during each lesson.

There are many benefits to online lessons, one being it enables me to record every lesson which means your teen can rewatch and relisten as many times as he'd like whether that's in two weeks or four years. It also means you're not fighting traffic or racing to meet me at my physical location or somewhere else we decide to meet like the library.
  • My teen's grades are pretty good right now. Should I wait?
The simple answer is NO! Choose to be proactive vs reactive. EVERY teen hits his or her wall at some point. I always say teens are like ticking time bombs. Maybe it's 6th grade or calculus 3 in college. But at some point, your child's natural abilities will run out or plateau without study skills.

Yet, if your child learns HOW to learn and knows The NERDY Method, those rough spots are nothing more than speed bumps, not mountains.
  • My child is neurodiverse / has an IEP. Can you work with him?
Yes. Many of the teens I tutor are neurodiverse. I've taught study skills to tweens, teens, and young adults who have everything from ADHD, ADD, AuDHD, autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. I have also tutored teens with physical limitations such as deafness and blindness as well as teens with OT concerns.
  • I don't live in the United States. Is that a problem?
No. I've had the privilege to work with many international families. Teens have lived in several different countries such as: Australia, United Kingdom, Brazil, China, Nepal, South America, Canada, and more. Learning is learning, no matter where in the world you live. Yes, school systems may look different or school years start and end at different times, but teens benefit from The NERDY Method no matter where they go to school.

I will admit time zones can get a little tricky, but it has worked well before for it to be my Friday night and the teen's Saturday morning / afternoon. I am also available earlier in the day, so if it's only a 4 - 6 hour time difference, we can meet during your weeknight after your teen gets home from school.
  • What does your schedule look like? When do you offer lessons?
My business hours are Monday - Sunday from 10 am to 10 pm Eastern. I do not tutor teens on Saturdays after 3 pm or on Sundays before 3 pm Eastern. I limit my schedule to a total of 10 1:1 teens.
  • What is your cancellation / rescheduling policy?
I ask for 24 hours notice of any cancellation / rescheduling requests. If you or your teen fail to let me know less than 24 hours ahead of our scheduled lesson, I ask for a $50 rescheduling fee before our first lesson. This is explained in further detail in my terms and conditions. I am happy to provide those upon request :)
  • Do you offer content / class specific tutoring, too?
Yes! Your teen and I can work together for a total of 4 or 8 lessons a month. If your child needs help with a project, a paper, or even a class for a long period of time, I recommend 8 lessons a month. That way, your teen and I can meet once a week to talk study skills / complete the Love to Learn program and the other lesson each week will be for class specific needs. The investment is $550/month for 4 lessons/month or $900/month for 8 lessons/month.
  • What is the deposit? How does it work?
If you choose to make installments vs a one-time investment, your first monthly payment will be the monthly rate of $550 plus a one-time $250 deposit. The deposit will go towards the 7th and final month's payment.

If for any reason you decide not to complete the Love to Learn program, you will forfeit the $250 deposit.
  • How can my teen access the lesson recordings?
At the conclusion of the Love to Learn program, I will provide you and your teen with a unique log-in link to Thinkific. On Thinkific, your teen will find the self-paced version of the program, all of the supplemental materials, and our recorded lessons.
  • How do I schedule the parent coaching calls?
Every two months, you and I will meet to discuss what study skills your teen and I have covered so far in the Love to Learn program. I will answer your questions and give you suggestions on how to help your teen implement the study skills. So we will meet toward the end of month 2, 4, and 6. We will also have a quick chat after the final lesson :)
  • What do you review during the last two lessons?
Anything :) I let teens choose which study skills they'd like to review and/or get more practice on. Some teens have other concerns we talk about instead such as resume completion, preparing for the high school transition, creating a finals study schedule, and more. If your son or daughter doesn't have a preference, we will review 6 skills during the first review lesson and the final 6 skills during the second review lesson.
